Book Feature~ Cursed by Augustina Van Hoven

Cursed

Not everything is beautiful under the light of a silvery full moon. A new evil walks the night in the woods near Dante’s Hallow. Nicholas Harwood and his companions-a druid sorcerer, a witch, his best friend and a few ghosts, race against time to stop this new creature before the body count grows higher. Can they save the town without alerting the local people to the truth about the supernatural?

Excerpt

He was approaching a tight curve in the road where the forest grew thicker on both sides. Brutus stopped and stamped his feet, trying to turn around and head back to English Point. Nick had a hard time controlling the animal. “Easy boy, what is it what you sense?”

            Nick stayed in the saddle. If he dismounted, Brutus might bolt. Something was frightening the horse, something the creature could sense but Nick couldn’t. Brutus acted like this when Nick tried to get him closer to the cemetery than the maple tree. Something was nearby, and standing here in the middle of the road with thick trees and brush on either side was a good way to get ambushed.

He adjusted his grip on the reins and tapped his flanks to signal the animal to run. Brutus obeyed. They raced along, coming quickly to the tight curve. They rounded it, and the horse reared, dumping Nicolas onto the gravel.

Brutus disappeared into the foliage, leaving Nick on the ground. When Nick finally caught his breath and sat up, there, several feet in front of him was a handcart filled with fish and ice and a man stretched out on the ground.

But that wasn’t what nearly stopped Nick’s heart, or what had terrified the horse.

It was the thing that was leaning over the man pulling his heart from his chest—a gigantic black wolf.

As Thomas and Honoria set out on a wary journey to matrimony, can they learn to live together and hope love will grow between them? Or are they doomed to a loveless marriage of convenience from which one or both will want to escape?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
“I can be very generous with you if you are equally generous with me.”
Then, quicker than a striking snake, he sank his mouth onto hers.
Completely shocked, Honoria couldn’t think what to do, leaving Lord Danford to take full advantage of her paralyzed body. Thrusting his tongue into her mouth, he plundered here and there, then pushed incredibly deeply into her throat until she almost gagged. Meanwhile, he slid his hands up onto her breasts, squeezing them until they ached, even through her clothing. At last, he released her right breast and that hand suddenly tried to worm its way underneath her skirts, his fingers brushing her knee, her thigh…
That touch, on her most intimate flesh, acted as a bucket of cold water thrown in Honoria’s face. She gasped as though coming up for air and was suddenly free of the deadly paralysis. Rearing back, she brought her arms up between them, planted her hands squarely on his chest, and heaved him across the carriage into the opposite corner. His head hit the windowpane with a crack, eliciting a groan from the man.
Lord Danford slowly sat up rubbing the back of his head. He cocked his head and frowned, like a puzzled hound. Without hesitation, Honoria grabbed the door handle, wrenched it downward, and threw it open.
The cobbled pavement flew by with dizzying speed, but she had no other choice. Taking a deep breath, and sending up a fervent prayer, she jumped.
Blurb
Lies. Betrayal. A blown undercover mission.
After ten years away, DEA agent Jarrett Brandt heads home to pay his respects to his deceased brother and hide out from the cartel kingpin who wants him dead. The last thing he needs is Marissa, his high school sweetheart, tempting him with her sassy smile and showing him the life he gave up. Add on his judgmental parents, and he’s ready to hit the road.
Widowed mom Marissa Reinn never had much luck with the Brandt boys. First Jarrett broke her heart, then she lost his brother—her husband—to a bullet. Vowing to uncover Jarrett’s secrets, she succumbs to the passion still burning between them instead.
When a team of assassins find him, Jarrett and Marissa will have to work together to survive and protect her son. How will they seize their second chance at love with their lives on the line?
Excerpt:
He nibbled her earlobe until a sweet gasp escaped her mouth.
“Jarrett, wait. Not outside my son’s room. C’mon.” She dragged him into her bedroom and pushed him against the door. “You’re wearing too many clothes.”
“So are you.” He cupped her ass and dragged her up his body. Oh, hell. He’d never get enough of her. Those legs and her breasts—fuck. As she wrapped her long limbs around him, he seized her lips and pushed away from the door.
“The bed,” she mumbled the words against his mouth.
He laid her down and topped her. “Lift your arms, baby.” He jerked off her sweater and groaned. The overhead light cast a golden glow across her smooth skin and curly hair. A sexy red-and-green striped bra cradled her breasts. He licked one of her taut nipples from atop the fabric and moaned from the scent of sugar cookies.
Marissa gasped and arched her back, pressing her breasts against his face.
“You’re killing me.” He nuzzled her chest before sliding his hands to her back and freeing the bra clasp. Her breasts bounced free and grazed his chest. His cock throbbed so painfully against his zipper that he lurched forward and dry humped her.
“Like what you see?” Her mouth hitched up in a smile.
“Tease.” He glided his tongue across her other nipple.
“Yes, more.”
He stroked the curve of her soft bottom lip. She swiped her pretty pink tongue over his fingertip, trying to draw it into her warm mouth, but he pulled back and jerked off his shirt. After he stripped off his jeans and underwear, she pushed him down on the mattress and swirled her amazing tongue across his chest. Ah, fuck. His muscles bunched as she trailed her decadent kisses down his abs and upper right thigh, circumventing his needy, straining cock.
“Marissa, kiss him.”
Weekend Revelations
After the cluster f*ck of 2020 and 2021, I’ve finally made time to pursue my interests/passions. One thing the pandemic has taught me is the need to do things and enjoy things now. My goals are to reignite my writing career and pursue hobbies I’ve put on the back burner. Well folks this weekend I took more steps in pursuing that path.
I attended a wonderful candle making and perfume making workshop at a lovely place called Scent Workshop. I had a blast, met some interesting folk and made some great things (pictures below). My perfume had a lot of floral notes (… cactus flower, hibiscus, geranium, to name a few) and my candle was an eclectic mix of lemongrass (very strong but one of my fave scents, I learned to use it sparingly, mojito, and dark plum). My interest in developing a niche candle and perfume line was reawakened. I’m currently in deep thought about how to make that happen.
I also read a murder mystery (with a splash of romance) and my taste for those type of stories was renewed… or maybe it was just the author :). Christine Feehan does a mystery right! I’ve always enjoyed her paranormal romance but I was pleasantly surprised by her novel Murder At Sunrise Lake. If you enjoy your murder mystery sprinkled with romance, girl power and friendships… give it a read.
So friends, after my semi-busy weekend I’ll say go ahead and do those things you’re interested in and try something new…. even if it’s just a book that’s not your usual preference. I did and I have no regrets.
Until next time…… Yolanda.
My finished candle. I named it’s scent Summer.
Magnificent Man Candy Monday
It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a Man Candy pic but after watching Creed during the Thanksgiving weekend I got inspired. This Monday’s Magnificent Man Candy is none other than the gorgeous Micheal B. Jordan. He’s a wonderful actor and very easy on the eyes. Enjoy 🙂
2nd Annual Multicultural Romance Blog-A-Thon Info
3214165
Multicultural Romance:
Romance in which cultural, racial or ethnic background of one or more of the characters plays a major role in the story and in the romantic relationship.
Think beyond characters who are black and white (African-American and Caucasian) today’s multicultural relationships feature people who are Asian, Hispanic, Native-American, Middle-Eastern, and Bi-racial. In the 21st century love extends beyond all margins and readers love reading romance stories reflecting that.
May is Multicultural month and what better way to celebrate this than by showcasing authors who write multicultural romance. If you’re one such author participate in the Second Multicultural Love Blog-A-Thon. Each day (weekdays only) during the month of May a different multicultural romance author will be featured on my site. All that’s needed is your book cover, blurb and/or excerpt (of the multicultural romance novel/novella), buy links and your social media links. Want to write a guest blog as well or instead? That’s cool!
You’re welcome to host a giveaway on your guest day but it’s not required. I’ll be giving away a $20 Gift Card (Amazon or B&N) to a visitor at the end of the Blog-A-Thon. Any romance genre is acceptable (new adult, LGBT, erotic, etc.)
Interested? Great! Just click on the “Multicultural Romance Blog-A-Thon” tab at the top and post the top two dates you want. First come, First served.
I’m also offering a limited number (up to 10) of cover ads to feature during the Multicultural Romance Blog-A-Thon. For $5 you get a tagline caption, link to a website of your choice and your ad on the site during the entire month of May (during the Blog-A-Thon).  If interested please email me at yolanda [dot] ashton [at] yahoo [dot com].
Updates and Other Things
It’s been awhile… a long one… since I’ve written a blog post. I have quite a few things going on so let’s dive right in.
Upcoming Events
In May I’m going to host my second annual Multicultural Romance Blog-A-Thon. Last year’s was a huge success! There were several thousand hits to my site during the blog-a-thon last May. This year I plan to add another component to it and offer authors of multicultural romance a chance to take advantage of all the exposure, by offering side or top bar ads- for the moth for only 5 bucks.  Once I figure out the logistics, I’ll post more info.
Speaking of new ventures in the near future, I’ll be hosting Blurb Battles to authors as well. As a reader I devour blurbs and a good one will have me hitting purchase (or checking out) a new book in a heartbeat. The winner(s) will win a gift card and the Blurb Battle Champion title. This contest will be a treat to other fellow blurb lovers.
Learning Experiences
Besides reading romance novels and penning them, there’s another aspect of the genre I’ve been doing- editing. I’m one of those readers that as I read (and often after I finish) a novel I think about things that could’ve been done to make it even better. For the last several months I’ve been working on my editing skills as an intern with Entangled Publishing. I’ve read a lot of novels, read/take a lot of notes and edited quite a few novels. To be honest I’ve loved every minute of it.  So much so that in the near future I’m going to offer freelance editing services. I do have a degree in English. It’s time to dust it off and use it as I intended to when I was an undergrad; before life took over and beat the ish out of me.
This brings me to…..  A couple of weeks ago I read and re-blogged an amazing post that served as an epiphany. “I Quit my Teaching Job” on Suzie81 Speaks was that post. I read it (twice…maybe three times), read the comments and thought a long time about a few things. In my other life I’m a middle school English-Language Arts teacher. I could relate to quite a few of the things Suzie mentioned. I understood her anger, frustration and the overall “I’ve had enough of this….” tone (she didn’t state that, she might not have even been thinking that…probably just my feelings coming to the forefront…lol). I decided to make the 2015/2016 the last year I teach full-time. That’s my goal. I love educating young people but I love editing, writing and reading even more. I have one school year figure out a way to make it happen- in other words I need to get my ass in gear pronto. I need to stop making excuses and start making things happen.
Works in Progress
I’m working on two manuscripts currently. One is a paranormal romance featuring a witch who’s been running away from somethings and another is about a new adult who has to go back home to face somethings (including the guy who stripped her heart). Heavy stuff right? I’m in the first few chapters of both and my goal is to have them finished by June. So during Spring Break I’ll be writing my butt off. I plan on sharing snippets of the manuscripts on my blog and would love feedback on them. So stay tuned that will be happening in the near future as well.
So as you can see I’ve been a busy bee. If I haven’t posted something for anyone it’s not because I don’t give a damn. It’s honestly because I’ve been overwhelmed balancing my work life, family life and writing life. So please consider this an apology. I will be posting somethings I’ve neglected.
So thanks for reading this long post. I will be blogging more regularly now and welcome your thoughts, snarky comments and general opinions in the comment section below.
Until later
Novel Lines~ A Will for Love
AWillForLove400
Below are some of my favorite lines from my upcoming novella A Will for Love:
  • ..her eyes met the sky blue eyes that made her nights an emotional hell.
  • .. he had to tell Layna he was about to marry the woman he’s been engaged to his birth.
  • Eyes that once gazed at her with love, idolized her body with desire were now cold and foreign.
  • Mikael wondered how in the hell he would convince Layna to give him another chance.
  • …..Because the man, who had already devastated her life once, had the power to do it again.
  • “I am not excited to see him.”..Her voice sounded weak to her own ears.
  • “Did you not take my virginity, allow me to fall in love with you, connect to you, while being engaged to another woman?
I tried to capture sexy, emotional, funny and intense moments of Layna and Mikael’s story w/ these lines. Let me know what you think 🙂
Until next time….
Excerpt
“Ooh,” the taller woman said, “your friend doesn’t like it when you flirt.”
I glared at her. Vampires should not know more about me than I do.
“I’ll have to see that she gets over it,” a voice drawled from behind me. I whipped my head around in time to see a man standing up from a barstool behind me. I hadn’t even noticed he was there
God knows how I could have missed him.
He wore jeans and a dark blue button-down shirt. He had on dark brown cowboy boots, and as he turned away from the bar, he picked up a black felt cowboy hat from the seat next to him, placing it on his head. On anyone else, I might have assumed that the hats and boots were an affectation. On him, they looked perfect. He was utterly beautiful, with bright green eyes, and dark hair that curled down to barely brush the back of his collar.
I am undercover, I reminded myself sternly. Here to do a job.
When Garrett caught my gaze in his, flicking his glance toward the cowboy vamp, it was all I could do to keep from sighing aloud.
Would it have killed my partner to be a little more descriptive when he briefed me?
Of course that was the vampire cowboy I had to get close to tonight.
No making eyes at the informants, Cami.
But damn, he was hot.
“Nice scars,” he said, sliding his gaze along my bared shoulder.
“Thanks,” I said, almost breathless.
“But I thought you didn’t do Un-Claimed strays, Reese,” the short woman said, managing to both pout and smile at the same time.
And I am absolutely not attracted to vampires.
I could keep telling myself that.
