Work In Progress ~ Venom (a Multicultural New Adult Romance)

I’m sharing (finally as promised) a 777 word snippet of my W.I.P, tentatively titled Venom. It’s Multicultural New Adult romance. Please remember this is a rough snippet and has not been edited. Let me know what you think. I welcome your thoughts.

Chapter 1

“Why are you here?”

I tried to ignore the how it felt like my heart was being pierced by the way he was talking to me. He was angry, very much so. His stance his tense, his full lips rigid and any love he had previously for me was not shining in his artic green eyes. The red flush on his cheekbones was from anger.  His glare raked over me like I was bothering him.

So why was I here? I was a fool for love, the biggest one yet. Despite the many obstacles that were thrown in our path I was the dumb ass that truly believed love would find a way. With a deep sigh I realized love probably wasn’t going to help me tonight.

“Can I come in?”

He stepped out of the door way and stood to the side.
“Make it quick Alexis, I’m busy.”

Ignoring the new jab that tore into my heart a little bit more, I stepped in and looked around. He didn’t look busy. His living room was clean. Candles were lit on the table, along with a plate of wings.

“What do you what?”

I snapped out of observation mode and looked back at the face that had brought me so much love in the past and a fair share of pain.

“I heard you got into a fight.”

“Yeah so?”

The hard glint in his eyes didn’t bode well for the answers I was seeking. Okay this was going to be harder than I thought. I swallowed.

“I wanted to know what you fighting about?”

I hated the way I sounded, weak and unsure of myself.  Why couldn’t I be the type of girl who took control of a situation and demanded answers, all while sounding like she didn’t give a damn.

He continued with his glacial stare and then gave me a wicked smile. Again the feeling of not liking his answer was burning in my stomach.

“Are you sure you really want know what Matthew and me were fighting about?”

He moved and stood in front of me. I could see evidence of his run in with Matthew. Matthew was a big guy and he left proof of that. Jonah had a purple bruise forming under his right eye and a cut lip. Despite that he was still the hottest guy I’d ever seen.

“I fucked his girlfriend Kelly last night and he found out about it.”

I gasped at the pain that ripped through my heart.

“And here she is now.” He continued

I turned around to see a red mustang pull up in his driveway. I turned back to Jonah with disbelief in my heart. Before I could ask him what the hell was going on with him I heard a perky, high pitch voice behind me.

“Babe, we still on for tonight?” She eyed me with irritation and flipped her long blonde hair as she walked around me straight into Jonah’s arms.

Standing there like a petrified dumb ass, I watch the guy who was supposed to my boyfriend hug another girl in front me. He gave her a quick kiss on the lips before they both looked up at me.

“Alexis in case you haven’t figured it out yet, we’re done. Now get the hell out.”

After leaving Jonah’s house that night, I stood in front of my bathroom mirror and realized things needed to change in my life. First off I needed to stop being that girl. The one who lets her scumbag boyfriend cheat on her, treat her like dirt and still stick around because she believes their love will conquer on. Secondly I needed a makeover.

The natural girl look was obviously not working on me. Thankfully my brown skin was smooth and pore-less because I never wore makeup.  My shoulder length black hair was more often than not pulled back in a ponytail.  Wiping the tears off my face I took a critical look at myself. My cheekbones were high and combined with my light brown eyes, gave me a slightly exotic look. My lips were fat but shaped well. My friend Rebekah had even told me they were very similar to Kerry Washington’s. Even though it was superficial and shallow I needed to make the most of my looks.

And lastly I needed to move. My circle of friends was limited and there was no one in my life I considered a BFF. Months ago my father, who lived on The Outer Banks, had offered me the use of his small beach cottage. It was time to take him up on his offer.

Asher’s Mark Cover Reveal

Grace Ballard has been in love with Asher Howell for a long time. When she was sixteen, he became her hero, and she fell head over heels for the boy with a ring through his eyebrow, a big heart, and an unending sense of justice. But two years ago he left for college without a backward glance, leaving Grace to wonder if she’d imagined everything.

With no reason to wait for Asher to return, Grace moved on, and Asher’s brother, Adam, stepped in to help her pick up the pieces. But Asher never left her thoughts… or her heart.
Now, two years later, tragedy brings Asher home and back into Grace’s life. The boy who left her behind is now very much a man – a licensed tattoo artist, much to his parents’ dismay, and still carrying a major torch for Grace. But two years apart has changed them both, and the things that happened during their separation may create a divide that can’t be crossed.

Asher and his brother both left their mark on Grace’s heart. Will Asher’s be able to stand the test of time?

Author Bio:
After spending every work day with classrooms full of tweens and teens, then going home to three boys of her own, two of whom fall into the tween/teen category, you’d think that Amy Durham might like to leave the world of teenagers and young adults behind. Not so!

Instead, she spends her spare moments – which sometimes consist of waiting twenty minutes for her oldest kiddo to get out of band practice – with her laptop and a multitude of teenage characters trying to navigate their way through the twisted, difficult road of adolescence.

You might ask… “Why Young/New Adult Fiction”? Well, because it’s what she knows. As a teacher and a parent, Amy is around teens on an almost constant basis. And while it’s true they can be – ahem – challenging, they are also full of life, vision, and dreams. And that’s a really cool place to be.

Young Adult and New Adult Fiction allows young readers the opportunity to find hope for the situations they find themselves in, find determination to keep on going, and courage to pursue their dreams. It also allows adult readers the chance to revisit the exuberance of youth, remember the joy and poignancy of first love, and recall how it felt to dream with abandon.

Amy Durham is a wife and mother, an author, a teacher, an avid reader, and a musician. If she weren’t writing books, she’d be a celebrity chef!

See Through Me Tour

Taking a break from the Multicultural Romance Blog-A-Thon to share info about a great New Adult read. The Blog-A-Thon continues tomorrow!

See Through Me by Sera Bright
(Lose My Senses #1)
Publication date: May 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance
There’s only one person I want to see when I return home. But I know he won’t be waiting. It’s the reason I feel safe enough to come back.I’m so wrong.Ash Townsend isn’t the same quiet boy from next door. He’s tall, dark, and demanding answers. He wants me, but he doesn’t trust me. Who can blame him? When his own family tried to break him down, he still sheltered me in this town full of liars. And I repaid it by leaving him without a word.Because I’ll do anything to protect Ash. I have the scars on my wrist to prove it.

  Yolanda’s See Through Me Critique

I loved this book! It is definitely a three-star read! The main characters (Ash and Katie) have a history that forges a bond between them that eventually develops into an intense romance. Katie, a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, is a strong, yet gritty heroine. She’s real, she’s flawed and comes across as a believable character. She’s also been in love with Ash as for almost as long as she’s been alive.

I love characters with history and a real connection. Ash is abused by his parents but instead of making him a victim it’s made him a fierce protector of Katie. I love the element of suspense in this story, the sex and the overall love and tenderness Katie and Ash have for each other. If you love New Adult Romance then See Through ME is worth a try.

When I’m not plotting elaborate schemes in my head, I’m having a fabulous time with my own real life story. That’s what happens when you have three awesome kids, two fluffy (useless) cats, and one very patient husband. I can cook like a fiend but prefer to eat doughnuts with sprinkles for breakfast. Sprinkles make everything taste better. An avid reader of all genres, I shamelessly admit romance will always be my favorite. And while I enjoy the safe and familiar, I’m always up for an adventure. My debut New Adult Contemporary Romance novel SEE THROUGH ME will be released in May. Sunday Snippet/Sneak Peek Sunday

Here’s a sneak peek of my soon to be released (release date tentatively set for April 1st) New Adult novel His Source.

“I don’t want you anymore.”

Startled, Alexis caught the glass of iced tea before it fell out of her hand and hit the floor. Alexis couldn’t believe he was doing this now, on their date night, in the middle of Thursday’s, in front of everyone. This was the first date night they’d managed to fit in for weeks. Alexis suddenly realized that wasn’t a coincidence. The bastard had started dumping her weeks ago. Taking a deep breath, reaching for strength from an unfamiliar place, she looked up into blue eyes and watched the lips that had brought her so much pleasure repeat the words.

“We can’t be together.”

Licking her lips, she began to say something, anything that would help make sense of the craziness spewing from Sean’s mouth. The word why was forming on hers when he held his hand up, stopping Alexis before she could speak.

“It’s been fun while it lasted, but I need to be with someone like me.”

His cold words stabbed my withered heart. Someone like him. So she was a freaking loser because she wasn’t Native American?

It’s my new addiction- so much of one, that between reading NA, a full-time job, and motherhood; my writing has taken a back seat. Now that I’m somewhat back on track with writing (don’t judge me please), I have the urge to let others know about some of the wonderful New Adult worlds I visited.

The first batch (in no particular order) I’m sharing are NA eBooks I loved and recommend for purchase (unbelievably some these eBooks are free). They had strong characters, intense emotion, and a HEA/HFN ending.

My Love of Reading Romance

Astrology Meltdown (Mondays) is going on hiatus. For the immediate future my blog will feature more info about me, my upcoming works and my favorites (songs, books, movies etc.).

I am a voracious romance reader. I read on average three to five books a week. Some books I read more and some less. Reading is an intricate part of my life ever since I read my first Harlequin romance novel at the age of eleven.

Why romance you might ask? For years that’s all I read. My job as a teacher required me to read  a bunch of academic material complete an obscene amount of paperwork. So reading romance novels allowed me to relax and enter another world. Through romance I’ve learned about different cultures, religions, places and ideologies. Romance is a genre that can be historical, paranormal, erotic, suspenseful and modern.

So what’s the point about my ramblings of reading romance? I’m sharing a list of my favorite romance authors below. So here it goes:

Favorite Authors (I’ll read practically anything they write):

Sherilynn Kenyon-Her books are amazing and Styxx is epic. I love mythology, so it’s like learning and romance.

Jayne Anne Krentz (Amanda Quick or Jayne Ann Castle) – Her stories are wonderful, suspenseful, romantic and sexy.

Christine Feehan- Paranormal elements + Intense romance + Awesome sex = Satisfaction

Jessica Sorensen- I love Ella and Micha…enough said

So if you haven’t already give the authors above a try. To help me read even more, post your favorite romance authors (and their books).

Until the next time 🙂

Yolanda Ashton

Hi World it’s Yolanda :)

The darker the romance… the sweeter the love

The Darker Romance… The Sweeter the Love is currently my tagline and what I hope to showcase in my books. The Darker Side of Romance is not necessarily about ethnic characters. It’s about new adult stories touching on darker themes.  In my story His Source the heroine is dumped because her ex’s clan is racist and wants him to have a girlfriend from his culture. Racism is indeed a darker theme but I firmly believe when characters have darker obstacles to overcome their romance is sweeter and more emotion is involved in the story.

I live by the mantra: “Write what you like to read.”  I love reading the works of authors who write stories that have emotional and complex conflicts the hero and heroine have to overcome in order to be together. The new adult genre captures these edgy themes perfectly.  In order to make my new adult novels emotional, I usually think of various, painful reasons a relationship (for the 18-27 year old demographic) falters and come up with a field of concepts to write about.

So if you are like me and enjoy romance with intensity follow me on twitter @YolandaAshton.

Later Babes!

Y. Ashton
